In his unconscious state, Fisher has a graphical view of Mars in ancient times, of a prosperous world, of an advanced culture of giant humanoids (in later chapters, we will see how tales of Martian giants come out regularly).Ī civilization, perhaps, not so different from ours. In doing so, he discovers, to his excitement, that the sculpted eyes of the construction are actually something completely different: they are nothing short of openings to an ancient world that is hidden from sight that is, until Fisher carefully descends into the stone orbits and discovers the shocking truth. The hero of the story, astronaut Ben Fisher, decides to climb the enormous creation. It dominates the devastated landscape of Mars. Yes, you guessed right: they stumble on a huge, carved head of human proportions. The astronauts adventurous are confronted by a gigantic stone creation, which is clearly not the work of nature. It is only when they reach the Red Planet that, to their astonishment and enthusiasm, the group realizes that although Mars is clearly dead, it certainly hasnt always been so. The story is fun and revolves around a group of astronauts embarking on an ambitious mission to Mars. On the other hand, however, there may be a lot more to all of this than it appears?something that revolves around nothing less than government secrecy and conspiracy, as we will soon see. It is even referred to as ?the face on Mars? in the comic book itself.Ī strange but totally coincidental precursor of what would come to light a few decades later? Maybe yes. Of the three stories, its the second comic book in the trilogy which, for us, is the most important of all.Īnd why would that be? Because it revolves around nothing less than a giant, carved stone head that is found on the surface of the planet Mars. It was that year that Harvey Comics published a three-part production that received the title of Race for the Moon.Īlthough Kirby is primarily known for his distinctive and easily recognizable drawing style, he was not only the artist in two editions of Race for the Moon. Kirby died in 1994 at the age of seventy-six.īut it is to 1958 that we must now turn our attention.

Kirby chose to move to DC Comics in 1970, mostly annoyed due to his belief that his specific place in the creation of these and other characters had been deliberately minimized by Marvel Comics.
